| Essiac Tea |

| I am a believer in the benefits of Essiac Tea. Not only did it help cure my dog Beanny from osteosarcoma (bone cancer), but it is keeping my father's lymphoma in remission far longer than any of his physician's thought possible. While there are many skeptics, as with any non-conventional treatment that isn't generating large profits for the well-known pharmaceutical companies in this country, Essiac tea appears to have no real side effects or toxicity for most people and dogs (see below for who should not use Essiac tea). Therefore, in my opinion, if you are serious about preventing or curing cancer, it's worth trying. As with any treatment, please consult your veterinarian before using Essiac tea. There are many companies selling essiac formulas. Since only one company owns the rights to the original formula, it is not certain if these other brands contain the exact formula or not. For this reason, I only use the original Essiac. While it may be a little more expensive than some of the other brands, it worked for Beanny and my father and I wouldn't trust my dog's life to anything less. The one thing I have learned with Essiac, is that once you start using it, you must continue to take it, even if the cancer appears to be cured or in remission. My father made the mistake of stopping his Essiac tea after his lymphoma went into remission. A few months later, the cancer was back with a vengeance. Since then, he has been drinking essiac tea daily. It's been over 5 years and he continues to be in excellent health. Also, you must follow the directions for making the tea exactly. It can be time consuming to brew the tea, but once you get into the routine of it, it's a snap. |
The History of Essiac The following excerpt is taken from the booklet "I Was Canada's Cancer Nurse" written by Rene Caisse, R.N. In the mid-twenties [1920's] I was head nurse at the Sisters of Providence Hospital in a northern Ontario town. One day one of my nurses was bathing an elderly lady patient. I noticed that one breast was a mass of scar tissue, and asked about it. "I came out from England nearly 30 years ago." she told me. "I joined my husband who was prospecting in the wilds of Northern Ontario. My right breast became sore and swollen, and very painful. My husband brought me to Toronto, and the doctors told me I had advanced cancer and my breast must be removed at once. Before we left camp a very old Ojibway Indian medicine man had told me I had cancer, but he could cure it. I decided I’d just as soon try his remedy as to have my breast removed. One of my friends had died from breast surgery. Besides, we had no money." She and her husband returned to the mining camp, and the old Ojibway Indian showed her certain herbs growing in the area, told her to make a tea from these herbs and to drink it every day. She was nearly 80 years old when I saw her and there had been no recurrence of cancer. I was much interested and wrote down the names of the herbs she had used. I knew that doctors threw up their hands when cancer was discovered in a patient; it was the same as a death sentence, just about. I decided that if I should ever develop cancer, I would use this herb tea. About a year later I was visiting an aged retired doctor whom I knew well. We were walking slowly about his garden when he took his cane and lifted a weed. "Nurse Caisse," he told me, "if people would use this weed there would be very little cancer in the world." He told me the name of the plant. It was one of the herbs my patient named as an ingredient of the Indian medicine man’s tea! A few months later I received word that my mother’s only sister had been operated on in Brockville, Ontario. The doctors had found she had cancer of the stomach with a liver involvement, and gave her at the most six months to live. I hastened to her and talked to her doctor. He was Dr. R.O. Fisher of Toronto, whom I knew well because I had nursed patients for him many times. I told him about the herb tea and asked his permission to try it under his observation, since there was apparently nothing more medical science could do for my aunt. He consented quickly. I obtained the necessary herbs, with some difficulty, and made the tea. My aunt lived for 21 years after being given up by the medical profession. There was no recurrence of cancer. Dr. Fisher was so impressed he asked me to use the treatment on some of his other hopeless cancer cases. Other doctors heard about me from Dr. Fisher and asked me to treat patients for them after everything medical science had to offer had failed. They too were impressed with the results. Several of these doctors asked me if I would be willing to use the treatment on an old man whose face was eaten away, and who was bleeding so badly the doctors said he could not live more than 10 days. "We will not expect a miracle," they told me. "But if your treatment can help this man in this stage of cancer, we will know that you have discovered something the whole world needs desperately — a successful remedy for cancer." My treatment stopped the bleeding in 24 hours. He lived for six months with very little discomfort. Head Nurse, Rene Caisse |
| Essiac gets it's name from Rene Caisse's last name (spelled backward). In 1977, Rene Caisse signed over all her rights to her original Essiac formula to Resperin Corporation Limited. Dr. Charles Brusch of Cambridge, MA, witnessed the signing of the agreement between Rene Caisse and Resperin attesting that her original herbal formula was never revealed to anyone other than to Resperin. Resperin gave her the assurance that she sought, namely, that Essiac be produced and distributed for the benefit of all. On May 29th, 1995, Resperin transferred the rights to Essiac® and the corporation was voluntarily dissolved. Essiac Products Inc. now owns and manufactures the Essiac® herbal formula. To purchase the only authentic formula, click here: Although the original recipe is a closely guarded secret, the four main ingredients are believed to be: Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Inner Bark, Sheep Sorrel and Indian Rhubarb Root. Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) Burdock cleanses the blood and lymphatic system. It contains Inulin, which strengthens the vital organs such as the liver, pancreas and spleen. It also reduces mucus and prevents formation of gall and kidney stones. Its vitamin A and selenium help eliminate free radicals and its chromium content helps regulate blood sugar levels. Slippery Elm inner bark (Ulmus Fulva) Principal component is mucilage which helps the body cleanse itself of toxic waste. It helps nourish and restore plasma in the blood and lymph in the lymphatic system. It improves intestinal flora and soothes asthma. It also helps relieve acids from indigestion and eczema. Sheep Sorrel (Rumex Acetosella) Sheep Sorrel relieves internal ulcers and applied helps clear skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. Rich in vitamins, and trace mineral elements, it nourishes the glandular system. Sheep sorrel contains silicon, a necessary element for nerves and the myellin sheath that protects them. Sheep Sorrel cleanses blood and improves liver, intestinal and bowel function. Indian Rhubarb Root (Rheum Officinale) In small amounts, this herb acts as a gentle laxative and purges the body, especially the liver, of toxic buildup and waste. It helps counteract acids due to indigestion. Its malic acid also carries oxygen to all parts of the body, aiding in healing. Rhein present in the root, inhibits disease causing bacteria and candida albicans in the intestines. It helps reduces fever and inflammation. Studies show that rhubarb root has antibiotic and anti-tumor properties. |

| BIANCA’S STORY (10/2007) This is the story of our precious little Bianca, a beagle mix all of a year and one half old and the things that she has gone through in the past couple of months. Bianca came into my office one day this past July, cocked her head to the right, fell over and started flailing around. I jumped up and grabbed her to keep her from hurting herself. It was over in seconds. I called out to my daughter to come upstairs right away. By the time she got there Bianca had another episode. I told her to stay with her while I called the vet. Bianca had another episode while I was on the phone with the vet. They said to bring her in immediately. At the vet’s he checked her over and could find nothing. I told him that she had a head tilt to the right and that she stared wide-eyed but we didn’t think much of it. Nurses watched her and from what they observed and what I had told the doctor he concluded that Bianca was having seizures. Over the next week or so we had Bianca to overnight emergency care twice and the vets two or three. She endured IV’s, drugs, different doctors in different places and not knowing what was happening to her. The vet put her on Phenobarbital for her seizures and anti-biotic for infection. It seemed to work at first but then Bianca started acting like a drunken sailor. She stopped eating, lost weight, couldn’t stand up without help and had to be put in a harness. The doctor was worried, took her off the Phenobarbital and put her on another anti-seizure medicine. He also suggested that we take her to a specialist for neurological problems. He told me honestly that he did not know what was wrong with her. Two days later we took her to the specialist and he could not determine what was wrong with her. He said it definitely was not seizures and to stop giving her the anti-seizure drug. He gave us a laundry list of possibilities and suggested an MRI. He put her back on anti-biotic medicine and told us to watch her closely as it would take a few days for the anti-seizure drug to wear off. He said to leave her on the anti-biotic for at least eight weeks. He also said that he would be on vacation for the next two weeks. We took Bianca home and watched her. Our vet said to arrange the MRI through the specialist if possible. Bianca had her ok days and her bad days. She was on a harness at all times. She needed help to get on and off the couch. She had to be walked outside and held up while out there. We let go of her to go to the bathroom till she started falling while going. She had stopped eating almost entirely. Her stomach was constantly upset and she got sick easily. Her episodes were daily now, not too severe and short in duration. She seemed normal in between. She did not whimper or cry and did not seem to be in pain. The specialist was due back on a Monday and it was the Friday before. That afternoon Bianca got suddenly worse. She had seven episodes in two hours with some being severe enough that she had to be held so she wouldn’t hurt herself. She was wide-eyed, shaking and panting. My daughter was holding her and crying. She asked me if we were going to have to put her to sleep. I told her if she gets any worse and doesn’t eat we may not have any choice. At this point I couldn’t just sit there and look at her and I refused to give up on her. I went on my computer looking for websites, anything that might help. I found caninecancer.com and logged into it. There was a ton of information there. I emailed the lady that ran the site and asked her for her cancer fighting diet that she used for her dog. I slept on the floor with Bianca that night out of fear that she would fall off the couch and hurt herself. The next morning I had a reply for the lady that runs the site. She sent me the diet and highly recommended that I try Essiac, a herbal supplement. She said that it would not hurt her and could only help her. I went to a health food store that morning and purchased a bottle. I gave Bianca the recommended dose on the bottle and it knocked her for a loop. She laid around all day just out of it. I figured because of her weight I needed to adjust the dosage. I started giving her 5 ml twice daily. I started her on the diet also. The first 48 hours were amazing. Her appetite slowly returned, she was sleeping through the nigh and she had no severe episodes. The next two weeks were no less amazing. Her daily improvement was unbelievable and the vet saw improvement also. She has been off the harness for three weeks now. She has had no episodes for four weeks and her appetite has returned. She gets treats with the other dogs and is eating a mix of prepared food and dog food. She still has balance problems, still runs into things occasionally and rarely falls down. She is getting Essiac and Omega 3 daily and that is all. My little miracle dog is a joy to behold. She runs and plays with the other dogs. She digs in the back yard and plays with rocks. I am not debunking traditional medicine, all I am saying is that before you make that hard decision, please, please exhaust every possible avenue to find a solution. It may be traditional, it may be holistic or it may be a combination of both. Just ask Bianca. Larry Rush A few months ago my little 4 1/2 pond Yorkshire Terrier began losing weight and seemed to be having trouble eating. I took him to the veterinarian and was told he had inoperable cancer of the tongue and there was nothing that could be done. We went home with no medicine and no follow-up visit because there was no hope. I begain feeding him meat baby food with an eye dropper and listened to him cry in pain. I was desperate for some relief for him. One day I heard about the cancer-fighting benefits of essiac tea. I began giving him the tea twice a day with his meals. In two days, he stopped crying. Now after three months on the tea, he is again able to eat by himself and feels well enough to follow me everywhere he can. The cancer on his tongue seems to be gone and although the vet told me that mouth cancers usually travel to other parts of the body, I have not found evidence of any. He even sleeps all night without pain and crying. -- Judy M. January 5, 2007 I am sending you a testimonial (I've never written one before) about my dog, Peanut and her tumor. Peanut is 16 years old and started developing this growth on her breast last year, in the spring of 2006. She had three growths along her breast, and one of them started to grow very large. I took her to my vet. He examined her said that the tumors should be operated on. After he listened to her heart he said her heart had too bad of a murmur to survive this type of operation...but that he would leave the decision up to me. I came home and decided to just make her as comfortable as I can until her time came...I did not want put her through a bunch of medical treatments because of age and her heart. At that point a friend of mine told me about Essaic tea. I mixed it with chicken broth and small chucks of chicken and gave it to her. She weight only 24lbs, but I had her on 3oz, 3 times a day for four months. The tumor really grew very large...it was about the size of a grapefruit. I thought about putting her down, but she really was in no pain. Since I started her on the tea she finally could sleep at night again and it seemed like the tumor didn't bother her. I just thought I would know when it was time to put her down if necessary. But on the fourth month on essiac the tumor opened and this 'stuff' started to drain out of her. It smelled just awful. I have never smelled anything like it before in my life. It was blackish dark fluid with clumps of tissue. It was almost like a mixture of tar and jelly-looking stuff. I'll never forget that smell. Then I thought, 'maybe its time to put her down.' Then I thought that maybe this is what the tea is doing. The heavy flow went on for 4 days and then it slowed down. It became more of a clear substance and smells clean and fresh now. The wound is almost closed now, and it's all healthy tissue around it. Today it's the 14th day since it opened. Peanut feels wonderful. She is eating like a pig, running around and barking (not alot of running, but hey, she's 16 years old!) and just being her old self again. I will be taking Peanut back to my vet soon and telling him about the Essaic. She still has the two small lumps but they have not grown as of yet. And now she lays on her belly while she sleeps, not her side like she did when the tumor was there. But I will keep her on the tea for the rest of life. Thank you for this wonderful tea! I wish I took a picture of the tumor before the essiac, but I thought that if she died I didn't want that to be her last picture. And I don't like taking pictures of sad things. She lost her one eye about 6 years ago. But she's smiling here. I tried to take a picture of her opening where the tumor was but I'm here alone and she wouldn't lay on her side for me so I could take the picture. She lays on her belly now since all the fluid drained out. Before she could only lay on her side. Again thank you for offering this wonderful tea." Sincerely, Linda W. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Let me tell you our story. Just before Halloween our beloved family dog, Luke (miniature poodle) who we have loved for 12 and a half years was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It came from his anal sack, spread to his liver, spleen, etc. We consulted a veterinary oncologist. She said at this point not even chemotherapy would help him. She told us what signs to look for when the end was near. He was given "a few months". I heard about Essiac Tea from my boss whose sister was cured of colon cancer after using this tea. I have been administering the tea to him for a month and a half now and he has shown miraculous improvement. When we started him on the tea he was already showing the signs of the end, no appetite, straining and yelping when defecating, he could not go up or down stairs, seemed confused like he forgot how to poop and pee. His stomach was distended and hard. His tail was tucked under his bottom (For a poodle that's BAD, we thought it was broken in the down position). One day he was so sick I called my husband to come home from work because we didn't think he would survive the day. After two weeks on the tea he showed little improvements, some increased energy. After 6 weeks now on the tea he is almost back to normal behavior and energy. His appetite is back, he runs up and down the stairs, he takes long walks in the park. No more straining and yelping when he poops. Some loose stools though. He's barking again (He stopped barking for a month) His stomach is softer and his tail is UP most of the time! I am going to continue to give him your tea for the rest of his life. Even if it is not a total cure, it has definitely given him a good quality of life for the time he has left, but I'm still confident he will be cured. I'll keep you posted. Thank you doesn't seem enough for what your tea has given us. He is our Christmas miracle! May God bless you and your work. You will get your reward in heaven! Colleen - NJ Fight Dog Cancer!, September 09, 2006 from Slidell (United States) Our 10 yr old German Shorthaired Pointer dog was diagnosed with malignant melanoma back in June 2006, we immediately started him on Essiac Tea. The doctors initially told us he had 1-3 months to live. He's been on Essiac Tea for 3 months now, and the cancer has not spread. I don't know if the Essiac tea is the reason, but it certainly won't hurt him; and since the cancer has not spread (as we were told it would rapidly spread), we assume the Essiac is helping him! Our dog loves the tea, we give it to him twice a day and sprinkle a digestive aid in it just as we serve it. He laps it up! |

| Essiac for Pets |
Essiac may help your pet's health by:
As a general guide for treating animals, it is best to assess the dosage according to your pet's weight. Weight / Dosage Up to 15lbs (7kg): 1/2oz of tea per day 15 to 40lbs (7 - 18kg): 1/2oz of tea, twice per day 40 - 80lbs (18 - 36kg): 1oz of tea, twice per day Over 80lbs: 2-3oz of tea, twice per day The best results are seen in animals who had a much larger dose than these recommended doses. However, an issue with large doses for pets is the amount of Rhubarb they end up taking. Rhubarb is a laxative, and that is probably the main reason it is needed in essiac. In the first 70 years of the 20th century chemotherapy regimens tended to cause constipation, and that is not the case anymore. Dogs have much shorter digestive systems than people, and they are much more susceptible to diarrhea. So the larger dose of essiac must be balanced against the amount that can be taken without causing diarrhea. One way to decide what the dose for a pet ought to be is to increase the amount until they get diarrhea and then back off. WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE THE ESSIAC TEA: If your dog has kidney disease, are prone to kidney stones, or kidney infections. The varying amounts of oxalic acids in this tea are irritating to the kidneys. If your dog has have a bowel obstruction or diarrhea. Properties in this tea promote peristalsis (the action by which the bowel moves it's contents through). In the case of diarrhea, valuable fluids and electrolytes are lost through the rapid emptying of the intestines. Prolonged diarrhea can result in dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If your dog has ulcers or colitis. The Essiac has an action of being a laxative or cathartic (depending on how much you take). Some properties in this root can be highly irritating to ulcers and colitis, exacerbating (or worsening) these conditions. If your dog has tumors that are encroaching on a major blood supply or an area of an organ that expansion of the tumor could have dire consequences. In Rene's work, she reportedly noticed that in the beginning phase of a person taking this tea, the tumor could appear to enlarge before it began to break down. (One of the reasons she was adamant that they take very small doses.) If you notice any sudden pain or untoward symptoms after beginning this tea, stop taking it. If you have a brain tumor. In Rene Caisse’s work, she noticed that many times the tea seemed to make the tumor initially grow, then break down. This can be extremely detrimental in the brain tissue. Rapid or excess growth can put pressure on areas of the brain that affect body/mental function. If the tumor would break down, it can release pieces of the malignant tissue which could cause a stroke. Circulation in the brain is unlike the rest of the body. Methods of Administering Essiac to Pets Administer one hour before or two hours after a meal whenever possible. Best method - directly via syringe, eye dropper, turkey baster (large pets) food dish, etc. Alternative methods - mix with broth (beef, chicken, or fish) or with water; mix with food (if no other method works). You should bare in mind that giving your pet essiac tea will make them thirsty, therefore make sure they have plenty of water available. This will have a secondary beneficial effects on their health, by making them drink plenty of water. Watch for diarrhea when giving your pet essiac, if it is excessive cease giving your pet essiac until you have rid the problem and then start back on a smaller dosage.. |
