General Information and Diet
Dogs with cancer have special nutritional requirements and feeding your dog a cancer fighting diet can be an important component of treatment.
Some of the most comprehensive work on this subject was done by Gregory Ogilvie, DVM at Colorado State University. Dr. Ogilvie had previously worked in the Boston area, and treated one of my dogs for lymphoma many years ago, so I was already familiar with his commitment, compassion, and vast knowledge about dogs with cancer.
Also very interesting was the work done by Dr. Johanna Budwig, for which the famous Budwig protocol was named after. More information about Dr. Budwig’s work featuring flaxseed oil and low-fat cottage cheese can be found at the bottom of this page. I incorporated the work of both these physicians into Beanny’s anti-cancer diet.
Dr. Ogilvie found that while cancer cells thrive on sugars, they starve the body of proteins and carbohydrates. Cancer cells can use sugars, but not specific types of fats as a primary source of energy. When the cancer cells use sugars for energy, they produce lactate, a waste product that poisons the host. Lactate depletes the dog’s energy, allowing the cancer to weaken the body and the tumor to grow stronger. This condition is called cancer cachexia.
The diet recommended by Dr. Ogilvie consists of
– Small amounts of complex carbohydrates
– Minimal quantities of rapidly absorbed simple sugars
– High quality but modest amounts of digestible proteins
– High amounts of unsaturated fats
– Omega-3 essential fatty acids
I developed Beanny’s anti-cancer diet from vast array of resources. I read several books about both human and canine nutrition in cancer patients, spoke with alternative and natural therapy advocates and patients, and worked with a holistic veterinarian to be sure the diet was nutritionally complete. There are many other recipes which may work just as effectively, including a raw-food diet which some people swear by. I have provided this recipe for our website readers because it worked for Beanny and I hope it will work for you too.
The diet recommended by Dr. Ogilvie consists of small amounts of complex carbohydrates, minimal quantities of rapidly absorbed simple sugars, high quality but modest amounts of digestible proteins, and certain types of fats.
Beanny’s diet is based on Dr. Ogilvie’s findings as well as Dr. Johanna Budwig’s Protocol of flaxseed oil and low-fat cottage cheese, and then wasenhanced to add plentiful amounts of anti-oxidents and other foods and supplements thought to be cancer fighting. Most holistic veterinarians will tell you to immediately stop feeding your dog commercial pet food as the ingredients are often not of high quality and the processing of the food significantly decreases the nutritional benefits. A diet made with whole, raw, and non-processed foods enables the dog to get the maximum nutritional benefits. It is imperative that you boost the dog’s immune system so it can fight the cancer.
Beanny started the diet as soon as he was diagnosed with cancer and continued with it all through his chemotherapy treatments and until the day hedied. He tolerated the chemotherapy relatively well and he was extremely healthy until he slipped on the ice and died from surgical complications. I truly believe the diet and essiac tea were major contributors to his great health and aided in his ability to fight the cancer.
Beanny’s Anti-Cancer Diet
2 ounces Essiac tea before breakfast (on empty stomach)
1/2 cup brown rice (preferably organic and non-instant)
Two boiled chicken breasts (preferably organic). Sardines can be substituted a few
days per week.
1/3 cup chopped broccoli
2 chopped shitake mushrooms
1 clove chopped garlic
1 scoop NuPro all Natural Dog Supplement (see link on left)
3 St. Jon Naturals Shark Cartilage Tablets with Glucosamine HCI for Dogs (I don’t
believe this is available any more. You can substitute bovine cartilage).
2 Fresh Factors tablets (see link on left)
Selenium (200 mcgs)
Omega 3 Fatty Acid (Fish Oil) vitamin
Alfalfa tablet (1000 mgs)
2 tablespoons fresh pressed organic flaxseed oil mixed with 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese (Barleans is a good brand)
1/2 cup brown rice
Two boiled chicken breasts or lightly cooked fresh calves liver (alternate every other day)
1/4 cup chopped carrots
Co-enzyme Q-10 (30 mg)
Marrow beef bone (frozen, then microwaved for 1 minute)
2 oz. Essiac Tea
This diet was developed for a 120 lb. dog. Portions will need to be altered according to your dog’s weight.
If your dog won’t drink the Essiac tea straight, try pouring 2 oz. on a plate and soak it up with whole wheat bread. My dog loved it!

K9 Immunity™ Formulated to help dogs with cancer
What is K9 Immunity™?
K9 Immunity™ is an immune-boosting daily supplement specifically formulated to help dogs with cancer. And to help dogs prevent serious illnesses like cancer.
How does K9 Immunity™ help my dog?
K9 Immunity™ strengthens and balances your dog’s immune system so the body recognizes and destroys damaged cells. This improves their body’s ability to overcome illness and helps protect them against future illness.
Your dog’s immune system helps fight cancer in two ways:
1. Keeps existing cells healthy as they replicate
2. Rids damaged cells (like cancer cells) before they can multiply
Once your dog’s immune system strengthens, it may also help them:
Increase response to cancer treatment
Speed up recovery
Reduce side-effects from other cancer therapies
Prevent a serious future illness/relapse
Improve quality of life
Extend their time with you
How did my dog get cancer?
Every day, your dog replicates 100 million cells a day. Due to environmental factors and age, some cells become damaged during the replication process. When your dog’s immune system is strong, their body recognizes healthy cells from damaged ones and rids the damaged cells before they can cause health issues.
But when your dog’s immune system weakens, their body doesn’t recognize the damaged calls and lets them continue growing freely. This is when cancer and other serious illnesses occur.
K9 Immunity™ is derived from medicinal mushrooms
Most dog cancer treatments derive their immunomodulators from simple brewers yeast beta glucans. Instead, K9 Immunity™ derives theirs from organic medicinal mushrooms containing over 200 heteropolysaccharide immunomodulators. Each of these mushrooms are well-studied for their anti-cancer, anti-tumor, immune regulating compounds.
To maintain purity and potency, the mushrooms are grown in a highly-regulated organic facility here in the U.S. Other dog cancer treatment products may contain medicinal mushrooms, but most are from overseas and likely to contain toxins and other dangerous pollutants.
Proprietary immune-strengthening technology
The largest class of anti-cancer drugs used in the world today is a class called heteropolysaccharide immunomodulators (pronounced: hey-tero-poly-sak-kar-ide im-mu-no-mod-u-late-ers).
K9 Immunity™ products are made from the most technologically advanced immunomodulator in the world. It’s called Immune Assist Micron™. No other canine cancer treatment contains it.
How this benefits your canine companion:
- 100% bioavailable (absorption rate) for better results – brewers yeast beta glucans average 5-10% bioavailability.
- Activates ALL 260 different classes of immune cells – including natural killer cells, T-cells, and macrophages. Simple beta glucans only activate a few.
- Does not create any additional stress on the body while activating healing mechanisms.
- Supports regulatory functions and critical body systems including the nervous, hormonal, and immune systems.
Patented formula provides noticeable results
In addition to our proprietary Immune Assist Micron™ technology, K9 Immunity™ also contains:
- All three of the most widely used anti-cancer compounds worldwide (for humans and dogs): PSK, PSP and Lentinan.
- Nearly 200 additional immune-strengthening compounds called heteropolysaccharides (he-tero-poli-sac-car-ides).
Is K9 Immunity™ right for my dog?
K9 Immunity™ is safe for all dog breeds needing immune system support and has no known side effects. This formula is safe for dogs of all ages, pregnant dogs, and nursing dogs. As with any supplement, we suggest discussing the dosage with your veterinarian first.
Guaranteed safe, natural and effective:
- Safe for all breeds and sizes

Anti-metastasis properties found in Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP)
Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is a type of pectin which is extracted from the peels of citrus fruit. Pectin is used widely in preparation of food, often to thicken jams and jellies or in pastries. It is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA, and so has very low risk of bad reactions.
Modified citrus pectin has been treated so that more of it gets into the bloodstream. Otherwise, very little is absorbed when it is taken by mouth.
In an experiment, mice with breast and colon cancer cells were fed MCP by mouth, and has slowed tumor growth and less tumor spread. Men with prostate cancer when taking MCP. A nice publication our of Columbia University discusses the anti cancer action in either cells or in living bodies against breast carcinoma, melanoma, multiple myeloma, and hemangiosarcoma.
For reasons like these, MCP is one of the core anti-metastatic therapies used in the Full Spectrum treatment of dog cancer that we advocate. This approach used not only conventional care like surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but also diet, apoptogens, immune support, other supplements, brain chemistry modification, and more.
MCP works by binding to (blocking) a molecule in cancer cells called galectin-3. This is molecule is kind of like a lock (has an opening in it) that a key can fit in to. Galectin 3 helps the cancer cells do a couple of things. First, it aids cancer cells in attaching to things, which helps them spread. Secondly, galectin-3 seems to play a role in the death, or lack of death, in cancer cells. It helps them avoid apoptosis, the natural process where cells are supposed to end their own life when they are old, damaged, diseased, and so on. In this way, cancers behave as if they were immortal and keep invading and dividing…at the expense of the rest of the body. For this reason, MCP can be viewed also as one of the dietary apoptogens, or substances that turn on programmed, normal cell death, of cancer cells.
Another benefit of MCP is that it seems to be able to bind toxic heavy metals like lead, reducing the blood levels and lowering toxicity or other effects.
Please remember to consult your veterinarian before supplementing your dogs diet.
Omega 3's/Fish Oil
Like humans, dogs benefit tremendously from taking omega-3 supplements. Benefits include extended lifespan, reduced inflammation from arthritis and heart health. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid with anti-inflammatory effects. Because dogs cannot make omega-3 fatty acids in their body, they can only obtain it through the food they eat. Omega-3 provides important nutrients for a healthy immune system to support heart, vision, mental and joint health. It is one of the most commonly used nutritional supplements in treating sick animals with a variety of conditions including kidney disease, arthritis and high cholesterol.
Dogs with cancer particularly should take high quality (free of additives) Omega 3 supplements. According to Dr. Ogilvie from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, cancer cells cannot use fats for energy. Therefore, supplementing your dog's diet with essential fats increases your pet's immune system. Omega-3 helps increase the cancer patient's energy and stops tumor growth.
