You think your dog may have cancer, or your dog has been diagnosed with cancer.  Where do you go and who do you turn to?  Some general
veterinarians have a good knowledge of canine oncology but others do not.  Some may have access to the latest treatments while others are
using outdated protocols.  Further, some veterinarians are closed-minded and will only prescribe conventional therapies, while some Holistic
veterinarians will strictly employ alternative therapies.  It is my opinion that the best you can offer your dog is veterinarian who specializes in
cancer care (an oncologist) who will employee the use of both conventional and alternative therapies.

If you are fortunate to live near a large animal medical center who employs highly specialized veterinarians, has the latest equipment and cutting
edge therapies (including clinical trials) at their disposal, then I suggest you start there.  Many of these medical centers are affiliated with a
veterinary school and will be up-to-date on all the latest advances in the field.  If you are not living close to a center of this type, I recommend
getting the opinion of at least one veterinary oncologist (see link below) in addition to your regular veterinarian.  You can call one of the large
medical centers listed below and they may agree to provide you or your veterinarian with a consult over the phone.

It is essential that you develop a collaborative relationship with your veterinarian and you feel as if he/she is listening to you and is respectful of
your wishes.  In addition they should be knowledgeable about cancer and the options available to you, as well as compassionate and caring
toward your dog.  This is a difficult and emotional road and feeling as if your veterinarian is 100% committed to you will be important to you and
your dog.
